The Cherokee Nation has a sacred rite of passage for young men. The father takes his son into the forest, blindfolds him, and leaves him sitting on a stump all night long. No matter what happens, the son can’t move off that stump, he can’t take off the blindfold, he can’t cry out for help. When the sun rises and he has survived the night, he is a Man. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience, because each has to walk this path.

It is a terrifying night for the son. He hears all kinds of strange and threatening noises. He just knows wild animals surround him–maybe even bad people. But he sits on that stump, never removing that blindfold, never calling out, because it is the only way he can become a man. Finally, after a horrific night, he sees the rays of the rising sun shining through his blindfold, so at last, he removes it…and finds his father sitting on a stump right next to him, watching over him all night long, protecting him from harm.
